PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured project management method. PRINCE2 and certification programme for practitioners in the methodology who are accredited, qualified through training. It divides projects into manageable and controllable stages.

PRINCE2 methodology is owned by Axelos.

The PRINCE2 2017 certification scheme has two main levels,

PRINCE2 Foundation Certification

The PRINCE2 Foundation Level introduces the PRINCE2 method. The Foundation certification aims to confirm that you know and understand the PRINCE2 method well enough to be able to work effectively with, or as a member of, a project management team working within an environment supporting PRINCE2. The Foundation certification is also a prerequisite for the Practitioner certification.

Examination Format

  • Multiple choice questions
  • 60 questions per paper
  • 33 marks required (out of 60 available) to pass: 55%
  • One hour’s (60 minutes) duration
  • Closed book.

PRINCE2 Practitioner Certification

PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is for anyone who is managing projects as part of their role. The purpose of the Practitioner certification is to confirm whether you have sufficient understanding of how to apply and tailor the method in a range of different project environments and scenarios.

Prerequisites

To take the PRINCE2 2017 Practitioner examination you must provide proof of having passed one of the following:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation (this must be a 2009 certificate or later)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)*
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)*
  • IPMA
    • Level A® (Certified Projects Director)
    • Level B® (Certified Senior Project Manager)
    • Level C® (Certified Project Manager)
    • Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)

Examination Format

  • Objective testing
  • 68 questions per paper
  • 38 marks or more required to pass (out of 68 available): approximately 55%
  • Two-and-a-half hours’ (150 minutes) duration, no additional reading time
  • Open book exam (official PRINCE2 manual only).

PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner Certification

PRINCE2 Agile® has been developed as a single-tier Practitioner certification. The purpose of the Practitioner certification is to demonstrate that you can apply and tailor PRINCE2 Agile in a scenario situation.

Prerequisites

Since 1 October 2016, you can take the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certificate if you hold any of the following certifications:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation
  • PRINCE2 Practitioner
  • Project Management Professional® (PMP)*
  • Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM)*
  • IPMA Levels A,B,C and D® (Certified Projects Director).

*’PMP’ and ‘CAPM’ are registered marks of Project Management Institute, Inc. PMI is not affiliated with AXELOS. PMI does not endorse any AXELOS Qualifications.

Candidates can take PRINCE2 2017 training courses via one of AXELOS’ Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) or self-study for all the certification levels. AXELOS is not a training organisation  or an exam body, so the prices for all the training courses and exams are set by the partners and varies.

Examination Format

  • Objective testing
  • 50 questions each worth one mark
  • 30 marks or more required to pass out of 50 questions: 60% pass mark
  • Two-and-a-half hours’ (150 minutes) duration, no additional reading time
  • Open book exam (official PRINCE2 Agile guide only).
